I’ve loved amethysts and in particular amethyst rings, ever since I was a little girl and my grandmother brought me back an enormous multi-carat deep purple rock from her exoctic far eastern travels.

In 2009, Delamina hosted a contest looking for new ideas for our ‘Because’ ad campaign. It lasted over 6 months, with monthly entries selected for the final judging. And we were very impressed with the entries - all of them.

As 2009 draws to a close, I look back on the year and think of all the hours I have ’spent’ with my Delamina women. Many evenings after long days at work, and many weekends indoors, spent at my computer, seeking out women that I wanted to celebrate. Driven to find them, wanting to know [...]

Okay, I know I’m cynical, but I just can’t stomach the “Women of the world, raise your right hand” malarkey. For one thing - how many cultures ‘of the world’ wear the wedding ring on the right hand? For another - why the heck do we need a group of ad-men to tell us to buy ourselves diamonds? Hey mister - I don’t need YOUR permission!

The pink ribbon is an icon we all recognize and immediately understand. It comes in all shapes and sizes, in plastic and metals, in various shades and textures. We wear it proudly to show our support in fighting an invisible enemy that impacts our friends, mothers and daughters.

In all seriousness, maybe shoehorning your adorable pet into a two-piece designer jogging suit and carrying him around while you run errands, isn’t exactly what little Sparky had in mind?

Then, “You can be anything you want to be. Lawyer, doctor, rocket scientist.” As we got a little bit older and we idolized you a little less, we started to concentrate on how to make your clothes, how to take you apart and put you back together. We played with you and your friends, emulated relationships with you and Ken. We watched you go off to work and make your way in the world, with your convertibles and your houses. We engulfed you in a society in which women and men were free to relate to each other as human beings of dignity and worth. Free Love Barbie.

All of that being said, I began to think that the most green accessory, ever, was jewelry. Think about it. You would be hard pressed to find it in any landfill, at least intentionally. It gets passed down from generation to generation. It gets redesigned…and every little bit of the parts are treasured and recycled and reworked. Pretty much no part of it is ever wasted! Well, the next time I’m wrestling with picking up another pair of jeans to hang in the closet with the other five pairs I own, I might just do the planet a favor, and buy a fabulous piece of jewelry instead.

This was the point where I said who cares? I like to wear tons of jewelry. And I receive compliments on my quirky style all the time. People are always coming up and touching my pendant, picking it up, flipping it around in their hands or jangling my heap of bracelets which sounds like a wind chime. I think it’s all in how you wear what you wear, not how much of it are you wearing.

As my youngest child finishes her last weeks of high school and prepares to move across the country for college, I feel a wide range of emotions.

I was shocked. For some reason, this event stuck with me. As I continued about my day, the image haunted me. For 25 years I have worked in the jewelry industry, and have seen and repaired many a treasure.
