Let’s Get Personal

Now don’t get me wrong, I have nothing against buying a piece of jewelry for no reason other than the fact that I like the way it looks. My go-to earrings, for example, are a dangling pair I purchased just because I loved how the peridot stones and the gold wire in which they’re wrapped looked together (and green is one of my favorite colors to wear).

The Charm of Jewelry with a Special Significance

There is something extra special, though, about wearing jewelry with a personal meaning, one that can be obvious, like a pendant shaped as your first initial, or not. Whether it reminds you of another person, a major accomplishment, or a joyous event, that particular accessory will give you a boost each time you put it on.

And while it certainly can be, the meaning behind a personal piece of jewelry doesn’t have to be that deep. Coco Chanel pinned a white camellia to her lapel simply because it was a flower she loved. According to Chanel’s website, she “adored the camellia for its almost geometrical roundness and the regular perfection and classic order of its pure white petals.” Now a symbol of the French fashion house, the camellia adorns some of the most jaw-dropping pieces of Chanel’s fine-jewelry collection, in the form of rings, pendants, earrings, and watches.

Whether you’re a nature lover, a sports fan, an animal enthusiast—or all three—it’s easy to find a piece of jewelry that reflects your personal interests. The charm bracelet is a great place to start. Eternally in style and always a conversation-starter, this jingling wristlet is an ultimately individual, one-of-a-kind piece. Charms can be found in every material, from affordable silver to pricey platinum with diamonds, and in every shape imaginable—from musical instruments to martini glasses.

If you prefer a less obvious approach, birthstones are a subtle, colorful way to keep someone close to you close to your heart (or hand, wrist, or ears). What could be more personal than a unique multi-stone piece bearing the sparkling gems that represent your and your family members’ birth months?

As a November baby, though, I must admit I was never a huge fan of yellow topaz, so birthstones never found their way into my jewelry box. (My mom and sister, on the other hand, lucked out with April’s diamonds.) I prefer a more creative substitute—a gold wishbone-shaped pendant. (There’s a particular one I’ve been eyeing for ages.) My birthday occasionally falls on Thanksgiving, the ultimate wishbone-snapping holiday, and I’m sure it would give me an extra dose of luck on days when I really need a wish to come true.
