Totally Eighties
Like it or not, the ‘80s are back in a big way. Splattered all over the fall runways were neon brights, shoulder pads, skintight mini-dresses, and some glitz- and glamour-oozing styles that, considering these lean times, were quite a surprise to see. And, with recent photos from the set of Sex and the City 2 showing Sarah Jessica Parker decked out in eighties garb, and the upcoming release of the Fame remake, it looks like this trend won’t be a thing of the past anytime soon.
On the runways, the clothes weren’t the only thing to have gone back to the ‘80s. Hair, makeup, and accessories were also experiencing a fashion flashback. Models at Marc Jacobs were on eye-shadow overload, and hair was teased straight up to the sky.
Blue eye shadow and blue nail polish were commonplace. To accessorize, models were loaded up with two-tone silver and gold pieces, attention-grabbing, gigantic Dynasty-esque stones, and chunky gold chain necklaces.
While some women will be thrilled to relive this decade (fashion-wise at least), my hunch is that the majority—myself included—are not about to go all-out ‘80s. If you find yourself in that boat but still want to dip your feet into the eighties pool, try doing it with a few accessories.
Ian Saude’s Veronique necklace is a feminine take on the gold-chain trend, while Crysobel’s gold square bangle has a geometric feel. S.H’s Silver’s marquise-cut tourmaline and diamond earrings, and Sethi Couture’s pink and yellow diamond ring, boast a hint of eighties decadence, but are classic and wearable, too.
The best bet is to stay away from anything too over-the-top, unless it costs less than $10 at H&M, and go for pieces that have a slight eighties vibe, yet will remain wearable once the decade falls out of favor with the fashion set.
Because while the stars of Fame may live forever, the ‘80s trend surely won’t.
