Designer Spotlight: Clare Ullman

Clare Ullman was a fashion consultant in San Francisco for over 10 years before discovering that her true passion was creating jewelry for women. She now creates her award-winning jewelry designs in Berkeley, California.

Ullman says that the houses of Dior, Chanel and Givenchy influence her designs. But she is also a devoted world traveler; you can see the vibrant colors and textures of the Asian and Indian temple cultures reflected in her collections.

“As a designer, my greatest inspirations come through my travels. From the opulent temples of India and Thailand to the sacred ceremonies of Bali, I have found the Asian cultures to be seeped in an ancient artistry of color and design.”

Ullman is known for incorporating unique precious and semi-precious gemstones from around the world with pearls – often using combinations of South Sea and Tahitian pearls- into her designs, while enhancing the overall look with high-karat gold pieces.

Searching out goldsmiths in the villages of Bali, finding old pendants from Jaipur, and digging through vast lots of pearls to find the perfect centerpiece are all ingredients to my recipe for a great design.”

Believing that jewelry should be an expression of a person’s spirit, Ullman selects pieces using her intuition and waits for the design inspiration to present itself. “Sometimes my designs are manifested through my dreams of the gemstones and pearls.”

“A great design is a visual experience that captures the heart and mind and lifts you out of the everyday ordinary and into a realm of extraordinary expression.” Not an easy task, but Clare Ullman’s one-of-a-kind pieces prove that she can do it.
