On March 9. 1959, the Teenage Fashion Model Barbie® doll entered the world at the New York Toy Fair as a teenaged supermodel. She is a master of reinvention: while she is still a teenaged supermodel, she has graced the world over and even the moon with her ability to accessorize.

She has been an inspiration to the great designers of our day. On Valentine’s Day, these very designers honored her birthday with a Bryant Park fashion show in the middle of New York Fashion week. Who was the jewelry designer for this popular event? Bulgari.

Because Barbie knows her style, her jewelry is NEVER matchy-matchy. While each piece relates to the others, she is never perfectly matched. Earrings are Big Bling when Barbie is dressed up. Otherwise she wears hoops or very simple studs. Because she is Barbie, these choices are always of the highest quality plastic.

As Barbie is a busy supermodel on the go in a long running, on again, off again relationship, her days are varied from active to very formal. When she was first introduced fifty years ago today, she was wearing the famous black and white bathing suit. She often paired that bathing suit with simple hoop earrings.

In her fifty years, she has been through quite the career renaissance. Between her highly sought after modeling gigs, she has had every glamorous job ever invented: from rock star to rocket scientist. She has travelled the world and lived in the most fabulous place. While she has residence in the home of nearly every girl in America, her permanent residences have been New York and Malibu.

Through the years, much as changed in Barbie’s wardrobe. But because she has strict and consistent standards, there are some things that always remain consistent, especially in her jewelry selection. Barbie is not known for her necklaces, though she will occasionally wear a string of pearls or a chunky necklace. She often wears chunky bracelets to enhance those long, thin arms and perfect wrists. During the 1960s, she wore a lot of pins.
