Feeling Blue
Rampant layoffs, the tumbling stock market, nonstop rain—even the loss of that extra hour of sleep that occurred as we sprung our clocks forward—there are plenty of reasons to be feeling blue these days.
But look on the bright side. In the world of jewelry, feeling blue isn’t necessarily a bad thing. In fact, a little blue could be just the pick-me-up you need. (This, of course, is assuming you still have some money for accessories left in your budget. If not, a little window-shopping—whether done on the web or at your favorite jewelry store—never hurt anyone and can be quite cathartic!)
From deep sapphires to vibrant turquoise to March’s birthstone, aquamarine, possessing just a kiss of azure, there are as many blue-gem options as there are colors of the sea. And while you certainly can, there is no need to break the bank, as affordable options abound. Turquoise jewelry, for example, can be yours for less than $50, and since the stone makes such a statement with its electric hue, you can look like a million bucks wearing just that one piece.
Though pricier, aquamarine and blue topaz remain a steal when compared to diamonds. Akiyo Matsuoka has some aqua beautiful designs, including her “Caribbean Rain” ring and pendant, each featuring a single light-blue stone surrounded by tiny diamonds and set in gold. Falling rain was the inspiration behind these two pieces—proof that wet skies aren’t always a bad thing.
Thirty-three carats of London blue topaz are showcased in Enamorata’s 18-karat gold and diamond earrings, which boast the richest topaz blue I’ve ever seen. Considering the hefty carat weight, the $1800 price is decidedly reasonable. If, however, a four-digit tag still induces a case of sticker shock, the company offers an equally beautiful pair of 7.5-carat London blue topaz hoop earrings for a third of the price.
And that, no doubt, is something to feel blue about.
