A keshi pearl is defined as a non-beaded pearl formed by accident as a by-product of a pearl culturing operation. Since the oyster has prematurely rejected the implanted nucleus of the pearl, the keshi pearls become 100% nacre – giving them a greater luster than even the highest quality cultured pearls.

This Keshi pearl and Tahitian pearl necklace is a rare find, because Tahitian and South Sea pearl farms are now x-raying oysters to determine if the nucleus has been rejected. If it has been, the oyster is then re-nucleated, leaving no chance for a Keshi pearl to form.
These rare pearls can be created in both salt and freshwater. Keshi pearls are most often baroque in shape and are used in earrings, bracelets, necklaces and brooches. However, keshi pearls are known for their organic shapes and can also be found in rectangle, off-round, oval, flat and seed shapes. Keshi pearls - also known as poppy seed pearls - Keshi means poppy seed in Japanese – come in a variety of different colors and shades from black, peacock, white, and rose.
