It has not been easy for Alexa Ray Joel to grow up. Shy by nature, it must have been exceedingly difficult and painful to go through her own parents’ divorce from each other and then the subsequent divorces of her parents from their new spouses. All under the glare of the media spotlight. Fortunately, Alexa Ray is very close to both of her parents. Christie Brinkley and Billy Joel have a very amicable divorce and continue to be close friends.

While songwriting and singing are her fiber, Alexa Ray has just begun to overcome her shyness and break into the music world. Ironically, it was Christie who really motivated Alexa Ray to continue with her classical piano and vocal training. She grew up singing and playing the piano with Billy at home. He always recognized her talent but did not want to pressure her. Instead, he encouraged her to find her own style. So where Billy has a style that is classic rock and roll, Alexa Ray has much more of what she calls “Pop/Soul/Blues with a little bit of jazz.” She appeared onstage with Billy and Bruce Springsteen at a benefit concert for the Obama campaign. Wow, that’s what I call playing with the big boys. And she loved it!

Don’t think for a moment that Alexa Ray is hiding behind her parent’s fame. While she loves their support, it is very clear she is quite in charge of her own success!
