Hillary and Chelsea Clinton
I remember well those awkward teenage years. I was not an adult and not really a child either. It was bad enough in the anonymity of a small town. I cannot even imagine going through it as the daughter of the President.
Chelsea Clinton made it through. All the while, her mother, Hillary Clinton was there as a mother protector and advocate. Through everything from the jokes about Chelsea’s awkwardness to the Monica Lewinsky scandal, the two women stuck together and weathered the storm.
So it is no surprise that when Hillary’s image needed a soft and smart edge, Chelsea was recruited as a cheerleader for her mother’s presidential campaign. Smart and well spoken but not likely to upstage her mother, the two were the perfect balance.
This is not to say that Chelsea does not have an opinion or any fear to express it. A comment made by Hillary on the work ethic of young people offended Chelsea to the point that her mother made a public apology. No wall flower here!
It is apparent that Chelsea has not forgotten the sting of media scrutiny from her residency at Pennsylvania Avenue: she has made it a policy that she will not speak to the media and has made no exception to stray from that policy.
Chelsea was a more than willing campaigner for a second run at First daughter. I wonder if she has aspirations for public office in the future. I bet her mother would be a staunch campaigner on her behalf!
