It all started in the 1930s when Coco Chanel, the French designer of “all things glamorous” stated that “Elegance is Refusal”. Her fine jewelry offered the first glimpse of haute couture for women, the vibrantly feminine woman who considered herself ‘powerful while ladylike’. This year, I am resolved: I will only buy the very best. It may sound lavish, obvious even, but in the face of gloomy economic times I’m taking a vow to wait for true love before opening my wallet. Suffice it to say, 2009 is not a year for indulging in every platform shoe or designer collaboration du jour—no matter how much I crave a Lanvin for Acne denim trench. So, looking to last year’s highlights and remembering that true style is an investment, I give you my fashion and beauty favorites for 2008. Going forward, small luxuries are the name of the game.

If you do decide to splurge on a semi-precious or precious stone ring, cocktail styles give you a big bang for your buck. But no matter their color, their not-so-perfectly-round shape (the result of a culture process that does not involve the implantation of a bead nucleus) adds a unique, eye-catching, and not-so-precious touch to the bracelets, earrings, and necklaces they adorn.

The ever-wrinkling casualization of fashion has long eluded me. Growing up in the south, I was schooled in the principles of dressing for dinner and wearing lipstick to the grocery store. Now happily encamped in easy, breezy San Francisco, I am still a last bastion of hope for certain classic mandates: the belt should match the shoes; a black turtleneck is always elegant; and yes, there is such a thing as too much jewelry.

First we have the ‘collar’ length. Very snug. Very sophisticated. Collar length necklaces are great for formal occasions and look fab with anything strapless. To wear a collar, especially one on the smaller side of the 12-13 inches, you should have a thin neck, or a love of bondage. But if you can pull it off, this style looks fantastic. Even good with jeans and a blouse. Anything v-neck.

All of that being said, I began to think that the most green accessory, ever, was jewelry. Think about it. You would be hard pressed to find it in any landfill, at least intentionally. It gets passed down from generation to generation. It gets redesigned…and every little bit of the parts are treasured and recycled and reworked. Pretty much no part of it is ever wasted! Well, the next time I’m wrestling with picking up another pair of jeans to hang in the closet with the other five pairs I own, I might just do the planet a favor, and buy a fabulous piece of jewelry instead.

With fashion’s flower power in full effect, it’s only natural that this natural trend would blossom into the accessories world as well. From brooches to bracelets, some of summer’s most stunning pieces were inspired by the great outdoors.

And while it certainly can be, the meaning behind a personal piece of jewelry doesn’t have to be that deep. Coco Chanel pinned a white camellia to her lapel simply because it was a flower she loved. According to Chanel’s website, she “adored the camellia for its almost geometrical roundness and the regular perfection and classic order of its pure white petals.” Now a symbol of the French fashion house, the camellia adorns some of the most jaw-dropping pieces of Chanel’s fine-jewelry collection, in the form of rings, pendants, earrings, and watches.

But therein is my dilemma: I’m not really a less-is-more gal. Yes, I am a proponent of easy style and a defender of simple chic; I believe that over-exaggerations in fashion are triumphant on the runway and tragic on the street; and I am wary of the fleeting allure of trends.
