June - Pearl or Moonstone
Whether you wear them as a birthstone, at your wedding, or just because they look elegant with your little black dress, there is something romantic about wearing pearls. San Francisco socialite, Dorothy Parker, once said, “There are always those who cannot distinguish between glitter and glamour, just as there are always those who cannot understand why you should desire real pearls…”. Now there’s a woman who understands how amazing these gifts from the sea are!
The Miracle of Pearls
Truly one of nature’s miracles, it is amazing that such a classic gem begins as a tiny irritant in the humble oyster. Prior to the late 1800’s when man developed the technique of culturing pearls, all pearls were purely a natural phenomenon harvested from the ocean. It is no wonder they were even more valuable than diamonds!
The ancient Egyptians took them to the afterlife with them when they were buried. The Greeks associated them with purity, marriage and love. The Romans considered pearls the ultimate symbol of wealth and status. European royalty wore pearls on their clothing, in their hair, and in jewelry. King Henry VIII even had a beautiful wooden bed decorated with pearls for one of his many Queens. Read our Girls love Pearls section for more about these treasured beauties.
