September 16, 2009: Because We All Have Our Idols
This week it was announced that Ellen Degeneres will replace Paula Abdul as a judge on American Idol. Whether you like reality shows - Idol in particular - or not, the reaction to this choice is interesting to observe. There certainly is no dearth of opinion and people are passionate in both extremes.
Some love the fact that Ellen, a person with no special insights when it comes to music, is a representative voice on the judging panel that makes the initial decisions about who becomes the ‘American’ idol – the people’s choice. Others love that she is unlikely to take herself too seriously with regard to this pop culture phenomenon and that she may balance Simon’s quips that are perhaps a bit too self-important.
The other faction hates that a woman with no musical experience or talent will judge this show. And some are irate about a pending lawsuit against her television show for playing music without first obtaining a license, and feel that she doesn’t respect the music industry.
But if Ellen’s chemistry with Simon is half as good as her chemistry with Portia, then this is definitely the right choice. Ellen you are one of my idols and are our Delamina woman of the week.
Totally Eighties
Amy Gurvitz writes about the latest trend on the fall runways in the latest Bauble Babble.
“Like it or not, the ‘80s are back in a big way. Splattered all over the fall runways were neon brights, shoulder pads, skintight mini-dresses, and some glitz- and glamour-oozing styles that, considering these lean times, were quite a surprise to see.”
The Brooch Reinvented
Looking for some ways to recycle those antique goodies? Fashion addict Chrissy Bryant has some inspired ideas. “Often considered the “oldest type of jewelry,” you may have thought brooches were a prehistoric accessory, something that was only worn by ancient royalty – and you may have been right – until now. This season brooches are making a comeback.“ Read more…
Mothers and Daughters
Although mother and daughter never really got to know each other, they have a few things in common. High IQs and a grasp of languages for starters, but they took different approaches to displaying their talents. Laura Beth DeHority writes about Jayne Mansfield and her daugther Mariska Hargitay.
“I can’t really see Mariska Hargitay having much interest in her mother, Jayne Mansfield’s closet. Mariska, who has won Emmys and Golden Globe Awards in her eleven seasons as Olivia Benson in Law and Order: Special Victims Unit. While her mother did have musical and acting talents, they are not what she was known for.” Read more…
