July 22, 2009: Because a word to the wise is… unnecessary
You know what to do Ms. Sotomayor. You’ve always known what to do.
Born in the Bronx to Puerto Rican immigrant parents, your father had a third grade education, no English and died when you were nine. Raised by your mother, you managed to be class valedictorian for junior high AND high school. Going to Princeton as a Latino woman in the early 70s, on full scholarship no less, you encountered a different world, but you managed to make a difference to that world. And attending Yale Law School did not accept the status quo, but worked for what you believed in, even if a few feathers were ruffled along the way.
And now, stirring up a mucky soup of identity politics, while white men fret, you’ve kept your cool. You’ve done what you had to do. Keep it up lady.
Wise? Although the decision is delayed for a week, it looks like we are all going to find out. Sonia Sotomayor, you are our Delamina woman of the week.
Mothers and Daughters
Also from New York, but a far cry from projects in the Bronx, this week’s Mother-Daughter combo are hard-working women and one could also consider them wise. Laura Beth DeHority has chosen to write about Ivana and Ivanka Trump.
