May 27, 2009: Because Bad Girls Go Everywhere

Thank goodness for of my good friend Karen, who had a period of being a bad girl herself. As did most of the interesting women that I know.

h-gurley-brownKaren made me aware of an article in the New Yorker magazine reviewing a new biography about Helen Gurley Brown, title derived from one of Helen’s favorite mottos “Good girls go to heaven, bad girls go everywhere”. Helen would inevitably have been Delamina woman of the week at some point, just due to the fact that she was at least partially responsible for what Judith Thurman of the New Yorker calls ‘libidinal equality’.

helen-gurley-brownCharged with being promoter of ‘deep-cleavage’ or ‘lipstick’ feminism, Helen was really just a big proponent of women taking care of themselves financially and not only enjoying sex, but admitting it. When interviewed for the 20th anniversary of her tenure at Cosmopolitan magazine she pondered, “How could any woman not be a feminist? The girl I’m editing for wants to be known for herself. If that’s not a feminist message, I don’t know what is.”

The clincher that Helen truly is ‘Delamina’ in her soul was her response when asked if diamonds truly are a girl’s best friend. In her reply she suggested that you could marry for diamonds, but it might be best to buy one’s own diamonds. Diamonds may be a girl’s best friend, but a woman is her own best friend.

Congrats on 50 happy years of marriage, a new biography and making a difference in your lifetime: Helen, you are Delamina woman of the week.

Mothers and Daughters

kathy-paris-mumSpeaking of naughty, Laura Beth DeHority chose Kathy and Paris Hilton this week for her Mothers and Daughters series.

“Cool cars. Driving while intoxicated. Beautiful clothes. Porn videos. Exotic vacations. Paparazzi fodder. Darling little dog. Paris is the ultimate “Barbie on the Dark Side.” Whatever you think of her, you have to admire her way to take the bad publicity and turn it into cold hard cash.” Read more…

Easy in the Summer

osklenrunwayI can’t help smiling over Chloe Harris’ new Style Counsel column, ‘In Summertime, The Dressing is Easy’.

“I am a separatist. Well, sartorially speaking. I’m a passionate shopper who splurges on a must-have ‘piece’—like a YSL high-waist bow-tied purple skirt—and then spends who knows how many seasons deciphering what the hell goes with it.” Read more…

Interconnected with Susan Foster

susan-foster-tree-of-life-pendantThe Tree of Life: a tree overflowing with branches and filled with mystical powers. The Tree of Life has many meanings throughout the world in various cultures and religions, but a common belief is that the tree symbolizes the interconnectedness of all life on our planet.
