Let’s start with the fact that my mother is a freaking saint. When my husband asked my 98 year-old, Alzheimer-stricken grandmother (who is no saint) if I was well behaved as a child, she came to life, her eyes sparkled, she had her first lucid moment in years while she emphatically replied: ‘NO!’. She even chuckled knowingly.

My mother taught me to read at a very young age and created the most amazing reading games out of construction paper and catalog cutouts. Awesome. She recruited a teacher – from India no less – and started a Montessori school in my hometown so that I would be challenged (or maybe so that she would be less so). By the time I was in first grade, she had three younger babies to care for, yet she still made time to cart me around from swimming to gymnastics to creative dance to piano to French.

All that AND she bucked the June Cleaver trend. Silently, but with enthusiasm. Big hugs to you my mother – Delamina woman of the week.
