October 28, 2009: Because Discontent is the First Step in Progress

somaly_mamSomaly Mam is one remarkable woman. Sold into prostitution as a 12 year old girl, raped and abused daily in a brothel for about a decade, forced to watch the brutal torture and murder of her best friend, she has said that she was emotionally dead during that period.

Surprisingly, this is not unusual. Somewhere between 2 and 4 million young women and girls, some as young as 5, will be sold into sexual slavery within the next year. Bigger than drug trafficking, just under arms dealing, human trafficking is the second largest activity of organized crime. Shocking in this day and age.

But what is unusual is that Somaly managed to escape Cambodia with the help of a French aid worker. What is really different is that she went back. She is now full of emotion and devotes her life to rescuing and rehabilitating girls that have been forced into sexual slavery and prostitution.

Somaly, you are the Delamina woman of the week. You have my utmost respect and admiration.
