September 2, 2009: Because Firemen Aren’t Always

Burning Man, the strange ritual that happens once a year in the middle of the Nevada desert is taking place this week. In a week where people go out in the sand and ultimately set things aflame – Southern California is burning, and so did some homes in my neighborhood. I have a new respect for the element we call fire. And for a certain lady.

joanne-hayes-whiteShe suddenly appeared, wearing off-white boots, jacket, pants and hat, looking like the good witch Glinda against the men’s wicked witch of the west dark uniforms. Time slowed, even the fire stepped back in deference as she strode down the street with men in uniform saluting and greeting her.

Ms. Hayes-White is the fire chief of the largest urban fire department run by a woman in the United States. She manages 1800 people – and knows over1400 of them by name. She has personally worked in 41 of the 42 San Francisco fire stations over the course of her career.

Firm, fair and friendly, fire chief Joanne Hayes-White is our Delamina woman of the week.

Mothers and Daughters

isabella-and-daughterAnd speaking of smoldering, Laura Beth DeHority writes about a Mother-Daughter/Mother-Daughter trio of steamy women this week – Ingrid Bergman, Isabella Rossellini and Elettra Wiedemann.

“I thought I’d try something new and look at a grandmother-mother-daughter. There is such great irony in the similarities of their circumstances and yet, the world has changed completely. What used to be a complete scandal is now passe and much more than in the past, women are celebrated for being smart and beautiful.” Read more…

Sizzling Sapphires

s-h-silver-company-sapphire-and-diamond-bracelet2September ladies have arguably the best birthstone of all. The sapphire is super hard, ultra durable and presents so many options. “Most people associate the word “sapphire” with the color blue. Indeed, sapphire is considered to be the most precious of all blue gemstones. But sapphires exist in many colors.” Read more…

Chrissy Bryant has selected some stunning sapphires from the Delamina site. “Legend says that if a sapphire is worn by an evil person the stone will get angry and refuse to shine – if that doesn’t give you enough incentive to be a better person, these next few sapphire pieces will.” Read more…

Purrfect Leather

leather-fashion2Fashion Addict Chrissy Bryant has a leather problem. “If you ask me, Catwoman was the girl to make leather a sexy trend. The sassy feline burglar known for carrying a whip and getting away with high stakes theft - all while holding the key to Batman’s heart - was the reason for my first leather jacket when I was 15 years old. As if leather wasn’t hot enough, Catwoman took that jumpsuit to another level.” Read more…
