September 30, 2009: Because Even A Caged Bird Sings
She was inevitably going to be a Delamina woman. I have been waiting to celebrate her freedom, which keeps slipping out of reach, but a few events converged over the past couple of weeks that make now the absolute right time:
I witnessed U2 in concert, where 80,000 willed her peaceful release. We marked the UN’s International Peace Day – not exactly celebrating huge strides this year. And finally, it was the 21st anniversary of Myanmar’s National League for Democracy (NLD) – her party. It’s time to stop waiting to celebrate Aung San Suu Kyi.
Her parents were both involved in Burmese politics, and though she was educated and lived in India, the UK and the US, upon her mother’s death she vowed to serve her nation until her own death. She pushed for a peaceful process and established the NLD in 1988. She was arrested and detained in 1989 with no charge - yet she still managed to win the election in 1990 with 82% of the vote. In 1991 she was awarded the Nobel Peace prize, which she used to establish a health and education trust for the Burmese people. She has spent 14 of the past 20 years imprisoned in her own home, and her sentence was recently extended past the next elections in 2010. It is truly amazing that one tiny woman can scare so many fierce men.
She has sacrificed family and freedom to stand up for her country. This week we honor Aung San Suu Kyi as our Delamina woman of the week.

Cowboy Chic
Boots – no, cowboy boots - are the latest affliction of fashion addict Chrissy Bryant.
“A few weeks ago, I mentioned to a friend that there should be a guide for wearing cowboy boots. Laura Beth DeHority writes about Vera Wang and her daughters this week.
“When I was a little girl, my friend Anne and I used to bicker over which one of us got to wear her sister’s wedding dress when we played dress up! Being the only sister of all boys had its distinct advantages, but a closet to play in was not one of them!” Read more…
