Sexy South Sea Pearls
There is no pearl more spectacular than the stunning and sexy South Sea Pearl. Known as the largest and most beautiful pearls in the world, they have been called “Nature’s only living gem”. These enchanting pearls are formed in the largest pearl bearing oyster, Pinctada Maxima and grow to between 10 mm – 25 mm.
The process of culturing South Sea Pearls in these huge oysters takes place in the warm waters of Australia, Indonesia, Burma and the Phillippines. The largest and most lustrous pearls are reputed to be from the Northwest coast of Australia where there is no pollution, good tides and a relatively undisturbed natural habitat.
It takes no less than five years before a single pearl can be harvested from one oyster. Man triggers the initial step by implanting a nucleus, but the rest is a natural phenomenon. When the oyster is finally harvested it is always a surprise what will be found inside…a perfect pearl or an irregular baroque pearl. It’s fun when life is filled with surprises! It can take as long as 10 years or more to find enough well matched pearls to form one single strand of South Sea Pearls.
These incredible pearls form in a rainbow of colors including various tones of white, cream, pink, champagne, gold, silver, black, peacock, pistachio, blue and other pastel hues. Black lipped oysters (Pinctada Margaritifera) from French Polynesia, the Cook Islands and the Phillippines produce the dark and mysterious Black South Sea Pearls also known as Tahitian Pearls.
