THE DIRT
Akiyo Matsuoka is delicate and compact, yet she exudes inner strength and energy. With connections to Japan, New York City and the Caribbean, she is inspired by the beauty of nature around her. She creates jewelry which reflects aspects of nature and transforms them into simple, delicate and sculptural pieces.
Her biggest fashion influence is Yohji Yamamoto. "I've always admired his simplicity and innovative design, the cut, the shape, which comes alive when women wear his clothes. I have the same goals." And Akiyo achieves her goals. Her pieces are meticulously engineered and work as one with the human body.
The materials she most often works with are 18 karat yellow and white gold, diamonds, semi precious stones and pearls.
From an early age, Akiyo played the piano and was compelled by the tempos and rhythm of everything around her. She was a member of a very innovative band during the early 80's. Akiyo is also inspired by old films from around the world, music that evokes images and her two children.
